NOAA assists response after reported asphalt spill near Stockton

NOAA reported that it was providing scientific support after a tanker truck carrying asphalt was involved in an accident and went into Trapper Slough near Stockton, California.

According to the agency’s incident update, the U.S. Coast Guard notified NOAA’s scientific support coordinator on September 7. The amount of asphalt released was not known in that report, and an oil-spill response organisation was on its way.

NOAA said it supplied information about how asphalt behaves when spilled. The initial update did not establish the final extent of environmental damage or the outcome of the cleanup.
